Subaru has released full details of its fresh Outback, which has now recede ne on sale.

The fresh model longer, wider and taller than the model it respace s and interior space has also been increased. It also acquire s Subaru’s fresh ‘family face’, effectively a fresh grille and fresh front headlamps.

It acquire s 17-inch alloy wheels and a chrome-framed glasshoemploy as standard, while inside it benefits from increased seat adjustability and fresh soft-touch plastics.

Three engines are offered from launch â€" a four-cylinder 2.0-litre diesel; a four-cylinder 2.5-litre petrol; and six-cylinder 3.6-litre petrol engine. All engines are horizontally-opposed.

The diesel is mated to a six-speed manual ‘box and 148bhp and 258lb ft of torque. The 165bhp, 169lb ft 2.5-litre petrol acquire s Subaru’s Lineartronic auto’ ‘box as standard, while the top-of-the-range 3.6-litre five-speed automatic R produces 256bhp and 258lb ft.

Standard kit includes leather seats, electric winexecute ws Bluetooth connectivity, six-CD stereo, dual-zone automatic air-con, cruise control, and automatic activation for wipers and headlights.

Prices start from £26,295 for the four-cylinder models and £33,295 for the top-spec R model.

Full price and spec details of the fresh Subaru Legacy Tourer have been confirmed by the Japanese firm.

The fresh Legacy will only be available in the UK as an estate, as the saloon model will not be made available here. Subaru claims it features “increased space and comfort for all occupants, improved dynamics and refinement, and enhanced safety” and all models will be sfeeble with four-wheel drive.

Autocar’s first drive of the fresh Subaru legacy Tourer

Two horizontally opposed engine will be available; a 2.0-litre diesel and a 2.5-litre petrol. The diesel can acquire from 0-62mph in 9.6secs and recede on to reach a top speed of 120mph. It has combined fuel economy of 46.3mpg, while its CO2 emissions are 161g/km.

The 165bhp, 169lb ft petrol model reaches 0-62mph in 10.3secs and has a top speed 120mph. This unit also benefits from Subaru’s fresh Lineartronic automatic transmission.

Inisde, headroom has risen by 21mm over the previous model, and legroom for rear-seat passengers increases by 99mm, aided by an 80mm increase in wheelbase.

Boot space is up 67 litres over the feeble model to 526 litres and it can hfeeble 1677 litres with its 60/40 split seats ffeeble ed flat.

Standard kit includes alloy wheels, tilt-and-slide sunroof, heated front seats, six CD tuner with RDS and six speakers, dual-zone automatic air-conditioning, cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity, and automatic activation for wipers and headlights.

Prices start from £23,295 for the diesel and £25,295 for the petrol. The fresh model is on sale now.

Lamborghini funds research lab

Lamborghini has opened a fresh laboratory in Washington, which will develop future carbonfibre technology.

The Automobili Lamborghini Advanced Composite Structures Laboratory (ACSL) at the University of Washington will see Lamorghini work with leaders in aerospace and composite material development, including the university itself, The Boeing Company and the Federal Aviation Administration.

Lamborghini has made a substantial financial contribution to the ACSL and intfinish s to utilise ACSL’s research to develop future vehicles with lighter, stronger and more versatile materials.

Lamborghini CEO and president Stephan Winkelmann said: “Lamborghini remains committed to investing in its future, and advancing carbon fiber composite technologies is the key to achieving many our recede als.

“As Lamborghini has long been influenced by aerospace technology, the University of Washington’s collaboration with The Boeing Company and the Federal Aviation Administration is the complementary fit to furthering our research and development programs that will continue to set the benchlabel in carbonfibre technology.”

Daimler has announced series production of the fresh Smart Fortwo Electric Drive will start next month.

Production of the all-electric city car will hold space at the Hambach factory in France and it was announced when French president Nicolas Sarkozy visited the plot t.

The first 1000 units will be produced from next month, with full series production set to start in 2012. The first vehicles will be sent to major cities across Europe and the US for extensive testing.

Dieter Zetsche, Daimler chairman, said: “The Smart Fortwo Electric Drive proves that emission-free driving in an urban environment is already feasible today.

“With our decision to locate production here at the parent plot t in Hambach, we are setting the course both for series production of electric vehicles and for the future of this highly innovative assembly plot t.”

Free F1 event at Mercedes

Mercedes is to host a free Formula One grand prix event at Mercedes-Benz World next month.

Taking space a week after the F1 season finale in Abu Dhabi, Powered by Mercedes-Benz Live will feature appearances from F1 drivers and cars from past and present.

McLaren drivers Lewis Hamilton and Heikki Kovalainen will both be appearing at the Brooklands event, while Ross Brawn and Antony Davidson from the Brawn GP team will also be appearing.

Both Brawn and McLaren cars will be driven on the track and there will also be appearances from Mercedes DTM and F3 Euro Series drivers.

Former McLaren drivers Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard will also be appearing at the event on 8 November.

Honda 'to close design studio'

Honda is to shut its European design facility in Offenbach, near Frankfurt, according to media reports.

The decision to close Honda’s car and motorcycle design studios at its European R&D headquarters was hold n at the finish of September in a bid to gash its costs.

“This is a regrettable structure change due to the current economic picture,” said a Honda source. “The German design activities will be discontinued with effect from the finish of November.”

Motorcycle design is likely to be transferred to the company's Italian design studio in Rome, but car design is likely to be full transferred to Japan.

Notable cars designed at the studio include last year’s OSM concept and the Neukom concept unveiled at the 1999 Tokyo motor display .
